To Be Known by Another

“To know and be known – that’s all I want.”

I read these words at the university I attended. They were written in white on a giant black chalkboard in a massive auditorium. Some random student left it, like a message to others. Perhaps it was a cry for help. Those words stuck with me as a life- truth I felt must be written on every heart. How the heart longs for such a connection. Yet even blessed as I have been with genuinely great people in my life, I realized over time this full “knowing” can only be possible by one person alone – God!

Entry from – The Place of Divine Intimacy

Truly knowing someone and truly being known is a life reward and heart desire beyond measure. It is often an unspoken inner need, or an intriguing desire not entirely understood. Yet, the necessity of being known exists in our spirit, even if we are unaware of its presence. To experience this God-intimacy, that we are, in fact, wonderfully and abundantly known, ignites a consciousness within us that leaves a mark of deep impression. As we become aware that He looks right into our hearts, emotions, longing, and fears, we begin to understand that He wants to be involved in every circumstance, thought, and motive. Jesus enters into the realm of our space, not attainable by any other being, and satisfies the need in us which is only met by the Divine. God cannot possibly be distant or aloof: that is not conceivable of The One who says He chooses to dwell in us. The reality of His closeness is more real than the actuality of all we see in the physical realm. The barrier to intimacy has been crossed in that God sees every detail about us:

From where he sits
he overlooks all us earth-dwellers.

He has shaped each person in turn;
now he watches everything we do.

~ Psalm 33:14–15 (MSG)

We are not merely one person out of billions who have lived. We are unique, known, shaped, and fully understood by our Creator. We are not only made by Him with thorough detail and care, but we each are handcrafted with intentionality. He continues to bless us by extending gifting, purpose, and passion to us.

In the haven of His affection for us, we find an extended invitation, an intimate bidding into Divine belonging, closeness, and camaraderie of the Almighty. There we begin to see ourselves as known, and we even begin to know ourselves honestly. What a great position to find ourselves in, the sacred place of beginning to understand just how much we are loved. It produces a mighty resolve within us that desires to share, reciprocate, and pour out this same beautiful love.
