As we experience the immense love of God and the significance of His affection for us through the pledge of our acceptance, forgiveness, and belonging, something powerful happens in our hearts. Our souls encounter something so profound that it transforms the core of our being. “God’s love is meteoric, his loyalty astronomic, His purpose titanic, his verdicts oceanic. Yet in his largeness nothing gets lost” (Psalm 36:6, MSG). In encountering God, we come face-to-face with the most prevailing and influential promoter of lasting change—love. Without it, we have nothing. With it, we have everything. Love opens endless possibilities.
It is impossible for anyone to buy, earn, warrant, or achieve this love by any human means. It is simply a gift, through and through. When we feel we are at our best, we may believe we receive love as though we somewhat deserve it. At other times, perhaps due to our personal sin battles, we may feel like we cannot secure love. Yet, we gain it by nothing less than trusting in Love’s giving. He wins over our hearts by His love. When we really see it, believe it, and accept it as a gift, it can do nothing less than totally transform our hearts and beings.
One cannot take in His love and remain the same. We couldn’t possibly bask in His affectionate offer and then immediately turn from the experience and resort to foolish self-ways. No matter how it tempts, empty sin will never fill us. While we turn to selfish ways and iniquities to try to fill our needs, only true love can fill us.
So, once we’ve tasted this goodness, it is as though our heart has only one option in response. That response is our attempt to love Him back! Our attempts may be delicate, and they may often fail, yet they are treasured by our Father. We are transformed by His love. We want to obey with every step and ultimately work towards living to glorify our beautiful God.
